Our privacy promise

The short version:

What we count, and how

Anonymous counts (always on, no cookies). Our own server keeps simple tallies: how many times the page was opened, which buttons and source links were clicked, the visitor's country, state or region, and type of device, and the website that sent them (for example "google.com"). We do not store IP addresses, names, cookies or anything that identifies a person. These tallies are kept by Cloudflare, which hosts the site, and are used only to see which stories readers find useful.

Google Analytics (switched off). Google Analytics is not running on this site, so no Google Analytics cookies are set. If we ever switch it on, it will load only after you click "OK" on a notice, with Google's advertising features turned off, and this page will be updated first.

Fonts. The site uses only fonts already on your device, so no font service learns about your visit.

Ask anything (the AI helper)

When you use "Ask anything", your question (and your last few questions in the same visit, for context) is sent to our helper, which runs on Cloudflare Workers AI using Meta's Llama model. We don't store your questions or the answers. To stop one person from using up the helper for everyone, the helper briefly keeps your IP address in memory to count how many questions it has answered in the last few minutes; that count is not saved. Cloudflare's own privacy policy covers its systems. Please don't type personal details such as your address, phone number or health information.

When you email us

If you email us (a tip, a correction or an Unspun Heroes nomination), we see your email address and what you wrote. We use it only to answer you and check the story, and we never share it. Ask us any time to delete your emails.

The email list

Our email edition is sent through Substack (shiftchangedaily.substack.com). You sign up on Substack's own page, so Substack stores your email address and its privacy policy covers what it does. We can see the list of subscribers. Like almost every newsletter service, Substack counts whether an email was opened and which links were clicked. We never sell or share the list. Every email has an unsubscribe link at the bottom.

Want your information deleted?

Unsubscribe from any email, reply to any email, or email shiftchangedaily@gmail.com and ask us to delete you. We will remove your address from the list.

Kids

Shift Change Daily is not meant for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their information.
